China silent to appeals from across the globe to halt dam on Irrawaddy River

Ignoring its stated commitments to social responsibility in foreign investment projects, the Chinese government has failed to reply to numerous public appeals from affected peoples and petitions submitted by overseas Kachin to Chinese embassies in five countries to stop the Irrawaddy-Myitsone dam project in Kachin State, Burma.

Alumni in Education for Development Workshop

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On 12 Oct 2009, two ERS-B alumni participated in the workshop: Education for Sustainable Development. This workshop was a preparation for Burmese youth;s participation in the  ASEAN Youth Forum.The workshop allowed participants to analyze the current situation of Burma concerning the environment, economy, politics, and culture, and the way these affects young people of Burma. Participants exchanged their individual perspectives about ASEAN’s 2020 dream: “one vision one identity” and its possible effect on Burma. Based on the participants' discussion recommendations were submitted to the ASEAN Youth Forum  held in Bangkok from 14  to 17 of October 2009.

 Renewed fighting and refugee influx a wake-up call to Chinese dam-builders. Burma Army clashes with Kokang at site of planned Upper Salween Dam

Shan activists are calling on China to immediately halt all investment in dams on the Salween River following the recent heavy fighting between the Burmese military regime and the Kokang ceasefire army near the site of the Upper Salween Dam planned by Chinese companies in northern Shan State.
